How a Menu App Affects Page Speed — and the Warning Signs

When a store feels slow, we usually blame heavy images or a bloated theme first. But there is one thing few people notice: how a menu app affects page load speed. The menu sits right at the top of the page, so it is one of the first things the browser has to handle. A navigation app that isn’t built carefully can drag the whole store down.

This article has two parts. The first covers the mechanics: why a menu app slows things down. The second covers the warning signs, so you can check your own store instead of guessing.

Why a Menu App Affects Store Speed

On the surface, a menu app is just a few buttons. But behind the scenes it usually pulls in JavaScript, fonts, icons, and images. Each one comes with a speed cost. Here are the four most common causes.

Heavy JavaScript That Must Run Before the Menu Appears

Many menu apps build their interface with JavaScript. When a customer opens the page, the browser has to download the file, parse it, then execute it — only then does the menu show up.

The heavier the JavaScript, the longer this step takes. On a powerful computer you barely notice it. But most shoppers buy on their phones, and mid-range phones process JavaScript far more slowly. A file of a few hundred KB takes an instant on a desktop, but on a cheap Android phone it can take a full second.

For a store, that one second is time the customer spends staring at a blank screen with no menu to tap.

Render Blocking: The App Holds Up the Whole Page While Waiting for the Menu

This point is often overlooked. According to Google’s documentation, JavaScript is parser-blocking by default: while the browser is building the page and hits a script tag, it has to stop, finish running that script, and only then continue building.

This is called render blocking. A menu app that places its script in a bad spot and doesn’t use the async or defer attribute can block the rendering of the entire page, not just the menu.

The real-world result: a customer clicks a product link, but the page freezes for a moment because it’s waiting for the menu script to finish. They don’t see the image, the price, anything yet. Meanwhile, the thing that really needs to load fast is the selling content, not the menu bar.

Every Icon, Font, and Image Is an HTTP Request

A nice menu often comes with icons from a custom font, sometimes even a background image or a logo for each item. Every resource is an HTTP request — one round trip where the browser asks the server to send a file.

Each request takes time to set up the connection and wait for a response. Ten icons means ten round trips. Add a custom font just for the menu and the list grows longer. Each one is small, but together it adds up — especially for customers on a weak 3G/4G connection in an area with poor signal.

A lean menu that uses inline SVG icons or the system font already on the device can cut a fair number of these requests.

CLS: A Late-Loading Menu Shifts the Layout

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) is one of Google’s Core Web Vitals metrics. It measures how much the interface shifts as the page loads. According to Google, a good threshold is a CLS below 0.1.

Also according to Google, CLS often happens when JavaScript inserts content into the page late, pushing existing elements down. A menu bar or navigation banner that loads after the main content is a classic example: it appears, takes up space, and pushes everything below it down.

You’ve probably run into this while shopping: you go to tap “Add to cart,” but right then the menu pops in, the layout shifts, and you tap the wrong thing instead. That’s CLS — both annoying and a reason customers leave.

Signs That Your Menu Is Slowing the Store Down

Now that you understand the mechanics, here’s the practical part: how to tell whether your menu app is causing problems. You don’t need deep technical knowledge, just a few free tools.

Run PageSpeed Insights

Go to pagespeed.web.dev, paste in your store address, and hit analyze. This Google tool scores your page and lists issues under two sections: Opportunities and Diagnostics.

Watch for lines that mention render-blocking resources or reduce JavaScript execution time. If a file name or description mentions navigation, menu, or drawer, there’s a good chance the menu app is part of what’s slowing things down.

Run both Mobile and Desktop modes. The Mobile score is usually lower and closer to your customers’ real experience, since most of them buy on phones.

Use the Network Tab in Chrome DevTools

Open your store in Chrome, press F12 to bring up DevTools, and choose the Network tab. Reload the page, then filter by JS type to see only JavaScript files.

The table that appears shows how heavy each file is and how long it takes. Look for files with names that resemble your navigation app. If a menu file weighs a few hundred KB and takes a while to finish loading, that’s concrete evidence rather than a guess.

A small tip: DevTools has options to simulate a slow network (throttling) and a weak CPU. Turn them on to mimic a real customer’s device, and you’ll see numbers much closer to reality than your own machine shows.

Compare Scores Before and After Installing the App

The most honest approach is to measure before and after. Before installing a new menu app, run PageSpeed Insights and note the score along with the LCP, INP, and CLS metrics. After you install the app and build the menu, run it again and compare.

According to Google, the good thresholds are LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, and CLS under 0.1. If, after installing the app, LCP rises or CLS jumps past 0.1, that app is costing you speed.

This matters, because the average store doesn’t run just one app. According to data cited by many sources, a typical Shopify store has around six apps installed, and some stores use up to thirty. Each app adds a little drag, and together it adds up to a number that isn’t small. And speed is directly tied to how many people leave the page — with the average cart abandonment rate already around 70% according to the Baymard Institute, every extra second can make that number worse.

Choose a Menu App That Cares About Speed

Not every menu app slows things down. The question is whether the app was built with speed in mind: lean JavaScript, no render blocking, few wasted requests, and space reserved for the menu so it doesn’t shift the layout.
