The search bar is one of the most powerful navigation tools on an ecommerce store, but many stores treat it as an afterthought — a small icon tucked into the header, expanding into a narrow text field when tapped. For shoppers who know what they want, that tiny icon is the first impression of whether the store can help them find it.

Placement: visible without tapping

The most effective search bar placement is in the main header area, visible as a text field — not hidden behind an icon. When the shopper sees an open text field with placeholder text like “Search products…” they know immediately that search is available and how to use it.

Amazon, Target, and most large retailers show the search bar as a full-width field in the header. It takes up space, but that space communicates a clear message: this store has a lot of products, and search is the fastest way to find them.

For smaller stores with fewer products, a full-width search bar may feel excessive. In that case, a visible icon that immediately expands into a text field on tap (with no page reload) is an acceptable compromise. The key is minimizing the number of taps between “I want to search” and “I’m typing my query.” One tap maximum.

On mobile, the search bar is often the first thing to get compressed. Many themes show only a magnifying glass icon in the header, which requires a tap to expand. This works if the icon is large enough (at least 44×44 pixels) and the expansion is instant. It does not work if the icon is small, tucked into a corner, or requires a page navigation to reach the search screen.

Full-screen search on mobile

The best mobile search pattern is a full-screen takeover. When the shopper taps the search bar or icon, the entire screen becomes the search interface: a large text field at the top, the keyboard opens automatically, and below the field, the screen shows recent searches, trending queries, and popular categories.

This pattern works because it eliminates distraction. The shopper’s full attention is on searching. There is no header competing for space, no product thumbnails pulling their eye away, no navigation menu suggesting they should browse instead. The message is: you’re here to search, and everything on screen is here to help you search.

As the shopper types, the results update instantly below the text field — product thumbnails, names, prices, and category matches appear after just a few characters. This is called instant search or search-as-you-type, and it reduces the number of completed searches that return poor results, because the shopper can see what’s available before they even finish typing.

Autocomplete: suggesting products and categories

Autocomplete is the feature that makes search feel fast. After two or three characters, the search bar starts showing suggestions. Good autocomplete includes:

  • Product matches. Thumbnails and names of products that match the query so far. The shopper can tap a product directly and skip the results page entirely.
  • Category matches. If the shopper types “shoe,” autocomplete might suggest “Women’s Shoes (124)” and “Men’s Shoes (89)” as category links. This helps shoppers who have a general idea but not a specific product in mind.
  • Query suggestions. Completed search terms based on popular queries. Typing “blue” might suggest “blue dress,” “blue jeans,” “blue sneakers.” This helps shoppers who aren’t sure of the exact term.
  • Spelling correction. If the shopper types “sneekers,” autocomplete should suggest “sneakers.” Misspellings are common on mobile keyboards, and punishing the shopper for a typo is a missed opportunity.

The speed of autocomplete matters. If suggestions take more than 200 milliseconds to appear, the shopper perceives a lag. Modern search implementations pre-fetch results and cache common queries to keep response times under 100 milliseconds.

Search results page design

When the shopper submits a search query, the results page should feel familiar — similar to a collection page, with product cards showing images, prices, and ratings. The layout should be consistent with the rest of the store so the shopper doesn’t feel like they’ve been taken to a different site.

Key elements of a good search results page:

  • Result count. “42 results for ‘blue dress’” tells the shopper how much there is to browse.
  • Sort options. Price, relevance, newest, best-selling — the same sorts available on collection pages.
  • Filters. Size, color, price range — again, the same filters as collection pages. This is where search and browse overlap: the shopper searched for a term and is now browsing within those results.
  • No-results handling. When a query returns nothing, don’t show a blank page. Suggest alternative terms, show popular products, or link to relevant categories. A dead end is the worst outcome of a search.

Search in the tabbar

On mobile, adding a Search button to the bottom tabbar makes search accessible from any page with one tap, in the thumb zone. This is particularly valuable for stores with larger catalogs where search is a primary navigation method.

With Navi+, a search button in the tabbar can open a full-screen search overlay — the shopper taps it, the search screen appears with the keyboard ready, and they start typing immediately. This is faster than scrolling to the header and tapping a small icon, and it keeps search available even when the header has scrolled out of view.

The tabbar approach also signals to the shopper that search is important in this store. A visible search button in the persistent navigation bar says “we expect you to search, and we’ve made it easy.”
