The 14-percentage-point gap between mobile and desktop cart abandonment isn’t random. It traces to specific physical and design constraints that exist only on phones. Understanding these barriers is the first step toward fixing them.

Small screen, big forms

A desktop checkout form has room to show multiple fields at once — name, email, and the first line of the address might all be visible without scrolling. On a phone, the same form requires scrolling, and the keyboard covers the bottom half of the screen when a field is active. The shopper can see maybe two fields at a time.

This creates two problems. First, the shopper loses context — they can’t see the full form, so they don’t know how much is left to fill out. A progress indicator helps, but it doesn’t fully compensate for the inability to see all the fields at once. Second, switching between fields requires scrolling, tapping, and sometimes dismissing and re-opening the keyboard. Each switch is friction.

Typing is slower and more error-prone

On a desktop, typing a shipping address takes maybe 15 seconds. On a phone, the same address takes 30–60 seconds — longer if the autocorrect fights back, if the keyboard switches modes for numbers, or if the field is too small to see what’s been typed.

Browser autofill mitigates this significantly. When the phone auto-fills the shipping address in one tap, the typing barrier disappears. But autofill only works when the form uses standard field names and attributes. Many custom checkout forms don’t, which means autofill either doesn’t trigger or fills in the wrong fields.

Interruptions are constant

Desktop shoppers usually have dedicated browsing time — they’re sitting at a computer, focused on the task. Mobile shoppers are often multitasking: on a bus, waiting in line, watching TV. Notifications pop up, phone calls interrupt, the shopper switches to another app to check something.

Each interruption is a potential exit from the checkout flow. When the shopper returns to the browser after an interruption, the checkout page might have lost the session, the cart might have timed out, or the shopper might simply forget they were in the middle of buying something.

Navigation plays a role here because a simple, fast checkout flow is more resilient to interruptions. If the shopper can complete checkout in 60 seconds, the window for interruption is small. If checkout takes five minutes with multiple page loads and form corrections, the probability of interruption rises sharply.

The back button is unreliable

On desktop, the browser’s back button has predictable behavior — it goes to the previous page. On mobile, the back button (both the browser’s and the phone’s hardware/gesture back) can behave differently depending on the checkout implementation.

In a multi-step checkout, the back button might go to the previous step, or to the cart, or to the product page, or out of the store entirely. The shopper doesn’t know which until they tap it, and a wrong result (leaving checkout entirely) means starting over.

In-page back navigation — a “← Back to shipping” link within the checkout form — gives the shopper predictable behavior. They can go back one step without risking an unintended exit. This is a navigation design decision that directly reduces mobile checkout abandonment.

The full site header — logo, menu, search, cart — typically takes 60–80 pixels on mobile. The status bar takes 44 pixels. The keyboard, when open, takes 260–300 pixels. On a 700-pixel-tall screen, that leaves 280–330 pixels for the actual checkout form.

Removing or minimizing the header during checkout frees up 60–80 pixels of space. That’s one more form field visible without scrolling, or a larger submit button, or room for a trust signal that reassures the shopper about payment security. On mobile, those pixels matter.
