Search and navigation together: integrated discovery patterns

Search and navigation are often designed as separate systems. The search bar sits in the header. The menu sits next to it. They look like two tools that happen to be neighbors, but they don’t talk to each other. The shopper uses one or the other, and the systems don’t share context.

The best ecommerce experiences integrate search and navigation so that each strengthens the other. A shopper who has browsed to a specific category can search within it. A shopper who searched for a term can see which categories match. The two systems work together as a single discovery engine.

Search within categories

The simplest integration is scoped search: when a shopper is on a collection page, the search bar searches within that collection rather than the entire store. If the shopper navigated to Women → Shoes and types “sandals,” they expect to see women’s sandals — not men’s sandals, not sandal-shaped candles, not everything in the store that contains the word “sandal.”

Scoped search requires the search engine to know the current context. Some Shopify search apps support this natively — when the shopper searches from a collection page, the results are filtered to that collection. Others always search the full catalog, ignoring the browsing context.

Even without native scoped search, you can approximate it with smart filters. The collection page already has a filter sidebar or bar. If “sandal” is a product type or tag, the shopper can select it from the filters instead of using the search bar. The result is the same — a narrowed set of products within the current category — but the mechanism is different.

Mega menu with search integration

On desktop, the mega menu is the primary browsing tool. Some stores integrate search into the mega menu itself: the top of the dropdown includes a small search field that filters the visible categories and products in real time. As the shopper types, categories that don’t match fade out, and matching subcategories are highlighted.

This pattern works well for stores with very wide category structures. Instead of scanning a grid of 40 subcategories, the shopper types a few characters and the relevant ones float to the top. It’s a hybrid of searching and browsing — the shopper uses a search term to navigate the menu structure.

The implementation is relatively simple: a text input at the top of the mega menu that filters the visible links using JavaScript. No full-text search engine required — just string matching against category names. But the UX impact is significant for stores where the mega menu is large and the shopper knows roughly what they’re looking for.

Filters as a navigation bridge

Filters on collection pages — size, color, price range, brand, material — are technically a browsing tool. The shopper clicked into a category and is now narrowing the results. But filters also function as a form of structured search: the shopper is expressing criteria (“blue,” “under $50,” “size M”) that a search engine could also handle.

The best filter implementations feel like search applied to a browsed context:

  • Instant filtering. Results update immediately when a filter is selected, without a page reload. This gives the same speed as search autocomplete.
  • Filter counts. Each filter option shows how many products match. “Blue (23)” tells the shopper how much there is to see before they click.
  • Combined filters. The shopper can select multiple filters at once: “Blue + Size M + Under $50.” This is equivalent to a search query but expressed through structured UI rather than free text.
  • Active filter summary. A bar at the top of the results showing which filters are active, with the ability to remove them one by one. This is analogous to a search query that can be edited.

On mobile, filters need special attention. A full sidebar of filter options doesn’t fit on a phone screen. The common pattern is a “Filter” button that opens a slide-up panel with all filter options, which the shopper can set and then close to see the filtered results. This keeps the collection page clean while still offering deep filtering.

Search suggestions that reference the menu

When the shopper types in the search bar, the autocomplete can suggest categories from the menu structure, not just individual products. This bridges search and navigation directly.

For example, typing “dress” might show:

  • “Summer dresses” → product match
  • “Black wrap dress” → product match
  • “Women’s Dresses (67)” → category link
  • “Sale → Dresses (12)” → category link

The category suggestions give the shopper an alternative path: instead of looking at individual search results, they can jump into a category and browse. This is useful when the search term is broad and the shopper would benefit from seeing the category context — how products are organized, what subcategories exist, what’s popular.

The unified discovery model

When search, menu navigation, and filters all work together, the shopper doesn’t think about which tool they’re using. They just explore. They might start by browsing the menu, notice something interesting, tap into a category, use a filter to narrow options, then type a search term to find a specific variant. Each transition is seamless because the systems share context.

This is the goal: a unified discovery experience where the shopper can switch between searching and browsing without friction. The menu, the search bar, and the filters are different entry points into the same product catalog, and each one enhances the others.

For Shopify stores, achieving full integration requires attention to how the theme, the search engine, and the menu system interact. A tabbar with both Categories and Search buttons (configured in Navi+) ensures that both entry points are always accessible on mobile. Good filter implementation on collection pages handles the in-between. And a search engine with category-aware autocomplete ties the whole system together.
